I am wondering if anybody can give me some help identifying what killed my yellow tang. I was thinking ich but not 100 percent sure. It looks different than anything I've seen before. Thanks for any help.

Looks like maybe velvet. I just read something @Humblefish wrote in another thread. Where I believe it was stated that Ick is under the skin (sub dermal) and velvet is actually on the surface of the skin. I'm not certain but that's what it looks like to me.

That's what I was afraid of luckily it was in my qt tank. I had an Achilles tang that I added to my dt only cause it was supposed to have been fully qt already. I noticed spots on him after a few days so I got him and the yellow out immediately. (Being tangs are worst for catching stuff) both the Achilles and the yellow have died. If it is marine velvet do I need to worry about my dt? The 2 sick fish were immediately taken out. My fish in my dt look fine and it's Ben 3 weeks.

Did the tang show signs of illness leading up to it's death? My first thought when seeing your pics was velvet as well. I lost all but two of my fish (cleaner wrasse and one green chromis) to velvet a little more than a year ago. Seemed they were fine one day and the next they were all dying one at a time. Horrible feeling. Sorry I didn't see your post before posting myy question about your tang.

That looks like velvet coupled with a bit of an infection which is normal with velvet. Click here -->>> Velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum) for more detailed info and treatment options.

Humble has a protocol for velvet in there that has worked well for him. I suggest following it and acting quickly.Good luck!

Yes you do. I believe velvet has a similar life cycle to ick. I think the safe fallow period is 72-76 days something like that. How quickly from when you noticed symptoms until their passing? Velvet works it's way through the fish much faster than ick does.

Yes both the Achilles and the yellow looked just like the pics I posted. The pic of the yellow I posted was from last night and I watched him die.

Yes get the rest of the fish out and treat them. Leave the tank fallow for 6 weeks minimum... 76 days to be safe.

My only thought is velvet kills very fast from what I've heard and they lived at least over a week after noticing it

This is the answer ^^^
Oh, maybe not velvet then. Maybe it was ick. @Humblefish will give you the answer.

It's very possible for some fish to develop a temporary resistance to velvet which is why some fish will die quickly and others seem to linger on. Those pictures are of velvet so that's what's going on. There could be other things involved as well, but the treatment for velvet with take care of most of those other things anyway.

I also agree with velvet and definitely leave the tank fallow for 76 days. We have all learned this lesson the hard way but do not trust anyone with their qt and treatment methods.

I am late to the party on this one, but @Soldiers4christ50 said this was in your QT tank? It looks to me you have live rock in your QT? If I remember from all the great folks here, you have to be very careful with treatment of fish in a QT that contains live rock. The live rock absorbs meds and can make the level go wacky, so you really aren't treating at the appropriate level. Maybe @reefsquared can confirm.

Hi there! This is an old thread, in which we diagnosed the problem already. It's nice of you to check in though! Just a quick note for you... if you want to tag the ReefSquad then you'll want to use the hashtag symbol like this # then start typing the word and the correct spelling should pop up in a dropdown menu. If it doesn't, then you'll want to be sure you are spelling it correctly to get the tag out to the other squadmembers. :) I hope that helps
