help I'm unsure

This is supposed to be a orange finger sponge and when I got him he was a dull orange and didn't have any white/whitish patches but I have no idea what's wrong with him ... is this normal? Is it not what I was told? Am I feeding it wrong? please help

needs filter feeder food. Make sure NO BUBBLES have reached it, and that when you got it, you never exposed it to the air AT ALL.

How will I know when or if it's completely dead/gone the underneath side still has his Lil fillers/cups
