help I'm unsure

This is supposed to be a orange finger sponge and when I got him he was a dull orange and didn't have any white/whitish patches but I have no idea what's wrong with him ... is this normal? Is it not what I was told? Am I feeding it wrong? please help

Yes, need pictures. Most sponges are hard to keep in a new tank.
