Hi everyone,
TL;DR ---> Cant get rid of Brown Diatom Algae. Cyano continues coming back, even after chemiclean. Whats the best export media for Silicates/ Silica acid.
I'm currently working on a friends tank and it was in rough condition when I started. My friend had an R/O Buddie, but the incoming TDS was around 180 ppm, so the DI canister alone was expended filling up a 30 gallon brute can. I can only assume quite a bit of straight tap water was added to the aquarium, as all of the invertebrates died. Corals were fairly closed up.
The tank is a 93 Marineland cube with a lid. Currently has 1 Pajama Cardinal, a Yellow Tang, and a Coral Beauty. They get fed once daily, sometimes once every other day.
77-78 degrees Fahrenheit. Salinity is at 1.025 sg. Oceanic salt water changes, so the Alkalinity comes in a little low, in the 7s. Phosban 500 reactor running Phosban.
Since then we have run Cuprisorb to ensure any copper is removed from the tank, assuming that's what did the inverts in.
We tried Chemi Clean for the Cyanobacteria Red Slime. The tank was fairly clean for a couple of weeks aside from some brown algae, but the Cyano did return.
We decided to try turning off the Ferric Oxide reactor so we could dose H2O2 in an attempt to kill off the cyanobacteria.
We dosed 1ml per gallon (10ml total) twice a day for about a week. Some of the corals closed up a little at the beginning, but that is all that happened to the livestock.The cyano was still growing very very slowly, so for about 5 days we dosed an increased amount of 20ml twice a day.
As far as I can see, the Cyano is dead. The Phosban reactor is on again, and there is even a Poly Filter to try to catch and residual Silicate/Copper.
The diatoms are back now more than ever, completely covering the sandbed and the rocks.
Help me.
