He has been closed up all day and has the brown stringy things coming out the back of him.

Here he was yesterday for comparison:

How long have you had it? How old is the tank? What are your tank parameters like?

This looks like a nem in poor condition. The brown stringy stuff is usually waste of some sort. It's hard to tell but that second picture makes it look like its mouth is completely open and it looks like it's already disintegrating. What is the pink stuff to the left of it?

It opened back up last night and was looking really good, until this evening when it closed up again. It also has been moving around the tank today, it usually stays put.

The pink stuff next to it is frozen mysis shrimp. The nem chose the spot in the tank where the food collects and I think my clownfish may have been feeding it, so there is a good chance it has been overeating. It’s mouth hasn’t been opening wide or anything, sorry for the poor quality picture. It’s pink and blue colors are still vibrant.

The nem is new, I’ve had it for about a week. Tank is 8 months old.
Parameters:
Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate: 0
ph: 8.4
Salinity: 1.024
Calcium: 380 (just dosed a little to bring it up)
Alkalinity: 12
Temp: 78° F
All other corals (lps and softies) and the fish and inverts are doing really well. No other anemones in the tank.

Not sure what you are measuring nitrates/phosphates with but your tank could probably use some more nitrate and phosphate especially if you are rocking with just LPS and softies. The nem would likely appreciate some but not sure that is the major issue here. What kind of lights do you have over the tank? A full tank shot is sometimes helpful. My guess would be not enough flow or not adequate lighting.

Some will say the tank is a little young for an anemone but if the system is stable and all the right components are there, its definitely possible to be successful.
