Purchased this fish last night at LFS. I have him in QT tank. I see "sores" on his scales. Can I get help identifying what the poor guy has wrong with him. I would like to try and save it if possible.

Meds on hand.

Chloroquine Phosphate
Nitrofurazone
Coper Power
Api gen cure
Ruby Reef Rally
Seachem Metroplex
Seachem Focus

That could be Uronema, but those lesions are typically more elongate. Inter cellular Uronema is very difficult to treat, but chloroquine has the most promise of the meds you have on hand. Take a look in the library section here for my article on “red band disease”.

Looking like it and if you are unable to find your answer, in whole you will want to get Quick Cure. If none, then Ruby rally Pro. Chloroquine Phosphate will also work but must be used precisely. Uronema is not an obligate parasite, and can thrive on bacteria, uneaten food, and waste so besides treatment also maintain a clean tank removing waste daily.
Best treatment choice is a 45 min formalin bath using Quick Cure then finished in a quarantine tank. Once in QT tank, treat and assure that the parasites have been eliminated. You can also soak food in metronidazole . . . Seachem Metroplex for 10-14 days.

Thank you, Jay

If not Uronema what else could it be?

Thank you Vetteguy,

I will check my LFS today for Quick cure and try that.

Bacterial infection from an injury. In fact, people often misdiagnose Uronema as a bacterial infection.
Using any medication as a bath will NOT help with Uronema because it is spreading inside the fish’s tissues where the medication cannot reach. Chloroquine does help limit its spread from fish to fish though.

Poor little guys didn't make it :disappointed-face:

Is bleaching everything in the QT the best way to eliminate uronema? Last thing I want is to spread this stuff to my next fish or even worse my DT.

Thank you for your help.

Sorry - the open mouth and red spot is pretty much 100% Uronema. Just checking - you said the "guys" didn't make it, it was just the one fish, right?

Uronema is found free living in most established aquariums, it isn't known why it doesn't continue to infect fish, but it really only goes after newly acquired fish. Personally, it is so common in green chromis, yellow wrasse and squampinnis anthias, that I avoid buying those species.

You can sterilize the tank with a mild bleach solution, but really, you can't keep Uronema from returning, so I don't know how much that will help - it is really more about the fish bringing it in with them.
