I’ve had a lettuce sea slug for a month and today it somehow got into my pump THROUGH my fish guard... I’m really confused I did not see it happen, only saw chunks flying around my tank. I’ve got a 20g peninsula. My question is, should I be worried about the slug poisoning my tank? I did a 5 gallon water change but I couldn’t get all the chunks of slug out. I’m pretty upset about the death, loved that little guy.

Sorry to hear about your loss. (>__<)’

I have a pair myself and I find them fascinating to watch.

Lettuce sea slugs are not true nudibranchs, and they are not toxic to the same degree [if at all] like true nudibranchs (or potential bombs like sea cucumbers).

You might get a bump in ammonia; no harm in performing another small water change and siphoning out any remnants you can find. You can also run some activated carbon as well.

Yeah I figured as much, really sucks I even bought the fish Guard just for him because he had gotten through and gave me a scare before. Really don’t know how he got through...I had just been taking pics of him 10 mins before. I’ll do another water change tomorrow morning and have been picking up any remains I find. RIP Gary.

sorry to hear. I've tried keeping these as well but crazy things happen to them.

One time I saw an elegance coral eat one alive. As far as toxins - nothing to really worry about, do a small water change if you are worried about it.

They need really fine mesh foam to keep them from slipping through. Their bodies are not as firm as a snails. More like jelly.

The foam mesh for my MP10s is small enough but I still have to keep the speed at the 3rd lowest setting or they get trapped against it and can't move. I use the same type of foam to keep them out of my overflow.

They breed in my tank and I lost several of them over time due to predation. I think elysia crispata (one of 3 species known as lettuce seaslugs) have an unwarranted reputation for being highly toxic. I don't even do water changes. I do run carbon though. Never had an issue with sea slugs toxins even before I ran carbon though.
