HELP! Lost 3 fish in 2 days :(

We got the goby into the qt this afternoon, and added the first dose of cupramine, we will continue to monitor!

YAY! how many more do you have left to get out? any more losses?

Unfortunately / Fortunately he was the only one left that we had to transfer. I'm sure it isn't surprising, but when I tried to feed him a few minutes ago, he wasn't interested.

Goby decided he was interested in eating today! :) Going to test copper and since it's been almost 48 hours, add the 2nd part of the dosage of cupramine.

On a side note, with the DT, should I continue feeding as normal, or feed a little less often? We've got 6 hermit crabs (blue and red legged), and 9 snails (bumblebee, cerith, and margarita). Should I leave lights on during their usual timeframe, or leave lights completely off until our 76 days of running fallow is gone?

Thanks again, hoping that with the goby eating in the QT, these are signs of improvement!!

I read through this post and would like to say r2r is a awesome helpful diligent community , ... Who stay curtius and repeat themselves without agitation. Well done and good luck kory.... Seems your through the worst and sorry for your loss.

Sure the experts will chime in but yes remain feeding as usual so you keep the bacteria population going... Keep you lighting schedule ... Unless some other factor like pest algae presents itself.

^^^ What charles said. :)

Do you have any corals? If not, then I'd scale the lights back to just 6 hrs per day. You can drop some pellets in every few days to feed the hermits, and/or a little bit of nori for the snails/hermits if you don't think enough algae is growing to sustain them.

*****UPDATE***** The goby has been in quarantine with Cupramine for 14 days now and seems to be doing fine. I know some only recommend 14 days with the cupramine and some have suggested as many as 30 days. Any thoughts? Just looking to see when we can add carbon to the filter and put it to work. I know we are still planning to stick with the 76 days of running fallow in the DT, but otherwise I just want to keep on top of things.

THANK YOU ALL for the help thus far!

Do 30 days of copper to be safe. If he's not having any negative responses to it, then go for the full monti

Update****

Today is day 40 (we added carbon to start removing the copper 8 days ago) and today I noticed a red spot on the side of the goby. He's in this quarantine tank by himself with only a rock which he is able to wedge himself under (its hollow) and I'm not sure if maybe he injured himself or if it something else. This spot just appeared within the past 2 days...

Uh oh. Ok I'm hoping it's just this (my mind immediately went to uronema)
Red Sores:

Symptoms - These are most commonly seen on butterflyfish. Red sores may be a symptom of a bacterial infection or something else entirely.

Treatment options - Nitrofurazone (active ingredient found in Furan-2 and Nitrofuracin Green Powder).

And NOT this
Uronema marinum:

Symptoms - These are the red sores often seen on chromis damsels. The disease seems mostly confined to damsels and clownfish, but I have seen some exceptions to that.

Treatment options - This is a very difficult disease to treat. Possible treatment options include: Metronidazole (ex. Seachem MetroPlex), acriflavine (ex. Acriflavine-MS), Chloroquine phosphate and copper. The problem is the fish can never be returned to the infected tank from which it came. Uronema is a “free living” parasite which does not require a fish host. So, going fallow will not eradicate it. Most fish seem protected from it via their natural immune system; but for some reason, chromis and some other fish are not always afforded this protection. Once a tank has Uronema, it must be assumed that the disease can survive in there almost indefinitely.

Formalin bath or freshwater dip may provide temporary relief for Uronema.

Could also be a bacterial infection, as his immune system is already likely compromised from battling ich. Post pics of the goby if you can.

Here's a picture... ugh he doesn't look good and I'm afraid all we have on hand currently is cupramine

That needs antibiotics asap. I'm afraid he could be a gonner anyway, but if you can find any or all of these 3 meds.

Bacterial infections:

Symptoms - Sometimes it's self-describing: Popeye/cloudy eyes, fin & tail rot, dropsy (bloated fish), etc. But some other bacterial infections, such as furunculosis, hemorrhagic septicemia, etc., can have varying visible symptoms. Any redness or open sores/wounds on a fish should be viewed with suspicion. Also, a white film or fungus-looking growth may denote a bacterial infection. It’s important to note that in many cases a bacterial infection is usually secondary in nature to a parasitic infestation such as ich, meaning if a fish has been battling ich for a while then his immune system has been lowered. This makes infection more likely for many opportunistic, harmful bacteria.

Treatment options - Broad spectrum antibiotic medication i.e. one that treats both gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial diseases. Examples of this include Furan-2, Kanamycin aka Seachem Kanaplex, Nitrofuracin Green Powder, Triple Sulfa Powder, or a combination of using both Erythromycin & Minocycline. The latter can be accomplished (albeit expensively) by using freshwater Maracyn 1 & 2 and then doubling the dosage for saltwater use. When battling a particularly nasty bacterial infection, combining Furan-2, Kanaplex and metronidazole (ex. Seachem MetroPlex) can be very effective (and safe). Props to “hedgedrew” for enlightening me of this.

So, I ran to petco (only place open at this time of day around here ) and grabbed API Melafix, got home and he was upside down and had passed away :( took less than an hour from when I posted the pic earlier, so I'm convinced that there was nothing I really could have done to save him. That's now the last of our fish, we have an empty QT now (which all of our parameters look good in ) and a dt with crabs and snails that has been fallow for 40 days :( I wanted to thank you all for your help throughout this roller coaster.. just feeling frustrated more than anything right now!!

If I were in your shoes (and I have been before), I would take this opportunity to hit the reset button. Dump the QT and start over. Sterilize everything with a 10:1 water:bleach solution and rinse thoroughly afterwards. You've got 36 days left fallow on the DT, so once the QT is re-setup you can begin QT'ing more fish.

Yes, please dont give up. This was quite the roller coaster, but a very educational one. You have everything you need to start over and do it right. This time around will be much easier for you. :)
