Hi- I’m been browsing looking for a tank to upgrade my 42 gallon into. I want something in the 100-140 gallon range peninsula style between 4 and 6 feet long. (5ft is perfect) . So far I’ve narrowed it down to the Red Sea 500, Waterbox Crystal (5526 or 6026 model) or asking Planet Aquarium if they would turn their Crystaline 5 ft model into a peninsula (currently it’s not). I leaning towards PA but it would then be a “custom” tank even if they are just moving the overbox and adding a low iron panel but that will likely increase the price. I also have no clue what the base price is for one of those PA tanks. What should I do?

That Red Sea reefer is amazing. Plus you have tons for RSR fans here who have amazing build threads and can learn from their experience.

Please add a poll as well...

The RSR 650p is 63 inches long.

Yes I really liked that length, but the width at 25.2 is a fraction larger than I need. The distance between the tank and the dining table is reduced and even inches matter .

How do I do add a poll from my iPhone?

I own a custom 60" x 30" x 18" Planet Aquarium peninsula. It is _not_ starfire glass, so I don't know about the added cost on that. I had it drilled 4 holes in one end, to my specs (I sent them an Autocad layout). Blackout that end, rimless, beveled and polished edges... I am _VERY_ happy with my choice. Quality is excellent. I've seen many tanks from the higher end builders, I really don't see any difference.

It wasn't cheap, but it was less than any of the other custom tank makers I talked to... and I talked to a bunch of them. I wanted 30" wide, which ended up costing me dearly, but... that's what I wanted, and I wouldn't have been happy with less. Could have saved a bundle if I'd have been happy with a 24" wide tank.

One you didn't mention is CustomAquariums.com... they have an online price sheet that lets you configure to your heart's content... 60" x 24" x 24" with aluminum frame comes in at $895. Prices are clearly posted, but call and talk to their sales people. Mine knocked off a bit on the price in an effort to get me to sign off on the build. I nearly went that way, but wanted the thicker glass that PA was offering. Prices were within a couple hundred bucks of each other.

PA doesn't deal with the public... you've got to go through a dealer. I was able to work through a friend, and thus able to review the paperwork (yeah, I saw what I was paying the LFS... wasn't enough to make a difference), and I was able to talk to PA themselves. It was a bit of a pain, really... dealing with CustomAquariums.com was easier, their salesperson did his best for me, but I ended up going the other way.

What’s really turning me off about Waterbox is their marketing. The guy who is always at the booth talking about the tank isn’t very professional in describing the specs. He just says it’s got low iron on all 5 side ( doesn’t explain why? You need it on 5 sides) mentions the LOOP system but can clearly explain what is it, and just delivers the tank in a gimmicky way. IMO.

I’ll check out CustomAquariums, thanks!

Yes that’s the thing about PA that’s going to cause the extra pain but I guess I see them as wanting to support the LFSs so I’m not too unhappy with the process they established, it makes sense.

He must be kinda new then. Most sales people will have the specs down and be able to tell you what you need to know. They may need to look up really specific numbers if you have an odd ball question.

The loop system is current usa's "new" controller system. Since the wsterbox rep mentioned it, I'm assuming they have a deal with current to sell the lights with tanks. You can sync your wave pumps, return pump, and lights. If the tank comes with the ic lights, stay away if you plan on keeping sps. The marine pro lights may grow some sps, but double check par readings on their website

Hard to go wrong with a RSR but they are a bit taller than I like. Planet Aquarium built my 40 breeder and the quality is excellent.

I have a aqua vin 150 gallon bulldoze glass, tank stand, canopy for about 2,500.the glass is very close to starfish but harder comes with overflow, bulkhead plumbing and a 7 year warranty. I love mine I think you should check it out.

I like their tanks because they use the bottom trim. I wish I'd have gotten the black silicon though.

PA offers "rimless" with no top rim, and "frameless" with no rim at all. The bottom rim helps stabilize the tank, the lack of top rim gives the look I was after.

Did you choose yet? I’m in the same boat but I’m really leaning toward the rsr 500. Waterbox is nice, but I think their smallest option is 170 gallons. And I don’t have the equipment for 17g water changes
