75 g reef tank. Building a 29 g sump/refugium. Bubble magus? Reef octopus? Something else? Want it to be quiet

I run an Aqua Excel EC-15 on my 75 in a 20L sump on Triton method. It has been going strong since October. I did need a new pump last week but warranty support covered it with no questions. It's d.c. power which makes it pretty easy to dial in.

Quietest skimmer I have ever used by far is the NYOS Quantum. I am currently using one now on my tank and cannot even hear when the skimmer is running. Also seems very well built. Have had no major issues with it so far.

I like eshopps years of expertise in skimmers, and use sicce pumps a gold standard for quiet pumps in the industry.

Best advice I can give is choose one with the pump outside of the Skimmer body they have a better contact time and hold larger volume of water as pump is outside of unit.

I actually found the units with the pump inside better just due to the amount of room it saves. I can get a much larger skimmer in my sump with the pump being internal. You are correct though, it does hold more water if the pump is outside but whether it holds so much more to make it more effective I don't know.

I would take a very hard look at the ATB Nano skimmer, Summer sale + 50 off for R2R members. Great deal.

Keep in mind that skimmers, appropriately sized, are generally similarly effective (20-35% dissolved organics removal) - https://www.advancedaquarist.com/2010/1/aafeature. That's not to say that you don't want a skimmer with a track record of effectiveness, but rather to be aware of other factors (reliability of the pump and ease of replacement, quality of overall skimmer, ease of disassembly, features, size, etc).

I’m currently running a bubble magus curve 7. on 90G reef. Has been working great with no issues since day one. Had it for 4yrs. now. I just ordered a new skimmer, Vertex Omega 150. It’s built much better and higher quality materials. Waiting on delivery.

I should add - I used to run a Vertex Somatic S60 skimmer - I thought it was excellent (if a touch loud). It had a Sicce pump which was a big plus for me. I ended up replacing it with a refugium (not enough space for both), but if I had the space I probably would have kept it for tank emergencies.
