What are some things to look for that may indicate that a browned out SPS will turn out to be a hidden gem?

The species is about it. You know that an Echinata will probably be some shade of blue. Plana will be probably three colors. Valida will have purple color tips. Spath might not color up much at all.

OK thanks. What if the species is not known? A LFS has a frag tank full of brown corals that are not labelled. Any tips in that case?

If you understand which species brown easy and which colors each species is supposed to be them you can look for hints of colors coming through and if you see one that’s not normally that color then you pick it.

I’d go for any brown Acro. Unless their are really pushing turds (no pun intended), no one really takes the time to frag garbage. Chances are very high that it’s something good that’s been mishandled. Negotiate a cheap price and hope for the best. Almost any Acro will exhibit nice colors once growing. Don’t expect the next home wrecker, but don’t forget that most high end corals are just bland imports that were cooked up a notch!
