I love wrasses personally. Keeping multiple species of fairy wrasses or pairs are very cool. Anthias are nice too, but certainly not starter/end of cycle fish. To start with, I like hardy fish like gobies. Clowns are very hardy too if you plan on keeping one/a pair. I really try to avoid keeping damsels as I find them to be very aggressive and I find myself wanting to remove them 6-12 months into the tanks maturation. They are great, cheap fish to add initially, but they really limit fish down the road. Clean up crews are also good to add initially. Reef hermits and a few snails are a great start, depending on algae growth.
