Help me...Crypto/ich

Ok if I set up a QT tank how long do they need to be in the tank before I can return them to the DT

76 days.

However, if you really do want this to only ever be a FOWLR you do have another option.

Apparently it is not recommended to use this with "dory". However, you could move your Hippo Tang to a QT to treat with copper and then treat the rest of your DT with this product IF you can get your hands on it. Would significantly shorten the amount of time you don't have fish in your DT. The trick is finding a vet to write the prescription. I believe a fairly low cost supplier is mentioned later in the post.

What is double triple post?
For some reason, my same post showed up 3 times. I can't completely delete my posts so just basically erased the extra version.

Sorry.. just noticed this :(

Apparently, this isn't good to use in a DT since it will also be absorbed by the rock and substrate. And, there is no way to test it to make sure it is at an effective level.

Your best bet really looks to be moving all your fish into a QT tank and treating with copper. Leave your DT fish free for 76 days.

Herbtana? Thoughts on this?
Never heard of it.
My thoughts are that if there really was an effective in tank cure, especially one that is reef safe, it would be all over the market and ich would cease being an issue.

While I am always for trying new things I always do so with a grain of salt. Many "ich cures" are really just vitamin supplements that promote healthy fish. This is the Ich Management side of the post I linked earlier. Healthy and well fed fish are always a good thing and will rarely show signs of an infection because they can fight them off naturally. The problem is when we introduce a stress to them that reduces their tolerance.

You really do have options. If you maintain very stable tank parameters and use high quality food, ich management might be worth trying for you. I hope you don't feel anyone is saying you "have" to do a QT. This is your hobby and you need to figure out what works for you. All we are doing is offering opinions and options.

I'm so happy to have all of your opinions and advise. I appreciate everything I am told. It is nice to have a group so willing to assist each other.

I want to do a QT tank and I know it is wise. Of course no one wants to wait a month or longer to put their new fish in their DT. Though look at the risks you are taking to chance ruining your entire setup.

I want to figure out how to now correct my error that I have caused myself by not doing the correct thing from the beginning. From now on I will being using a QT tank with any new additions.

Well, in my opinion, your best option is to get and set up a QT and transfer all of your fish into it. Treat them with copper (I prefer coppersafe). Leave them in the QT for 76 days total before moving them back into the DT.

That is your best bet, along with future QT practices, to make sure your tank is ich free.

Herbtana? Thoughts on this?

This is a completely herbal product that is mainly helpful in freshwater. In saltwater it would be used as a "management" tool and not a cure. QT with copper for 30 days (I recommend Copper Safe or other chelated copper product) and leave the display fallow for 76 days.

Oh and I broke open a herbatana bottle at the store and it smelled like one of those mosquito candles on steroids! Boy that was pretty bad lol. That wasn't really relevant but I thought I'd share anyway.

Ok guys...I have an update on my situation.

The Herbatana...is literally snake oil...I saw no improvement.

However I didn't have any losses in fish. Maybe it helped some though the white spot got worse and spread to all fish.

So...I did what everyone told me not to do. I panicked. I dosed my tank with seachem cupramine.

All my fish look great! The are happy and eating well!

great to hear, just make sure you get a copper test kit to check the copper levels daily or every other day since some of your live rocks/sand can absorb the copper, making it below the therapeutic lvl.

Also, what kind of fishes are in your tank? some might not react to cupramine well (ie, fairy wrasses).

I have the life rock by caribsea. So not technically "live rock" but yes I have been testing it with an API test...very difficult to read.

I have pair of clowns. Neon goby sailfin tang. heniochus butterfly and a regal tang (cause of the white spots)

I'm on day 8 of my 14 day treatment plan

Glad to hear your on the mend.
I used "kick ick", lost a few fish.
FWIW a 40 yr reefer told me, when you see a spot that doesn't go away, net the fish at night and pick or scrape the spot with your nail. I've done this, it works great. Get a cleaner shrimp, they work better!

I wanted a cleaner shrimp but...the idea of using the cupramin made me go with the neon goby. He set up a drive thru in a cave and they come through and he eats off them lol
