Okay first of all I have a Marineland 93 gallon cube, And a 30 gallon custom sump. I have two MP 10 power heads a reef octopus skimmer I have a chamber filled with Chaetomorpha algae and miracle mud.
The tank is doing good was established about a year ago I have a very healthy rose bubble tip anemone has been healthy now for over a month, I have plenty of zoanthids, Many other Corals and not too many fish.

I am having an issue with algae some green hair and also some Cyanobacteria. When I run my tests I don't have any phosphates and I don't have any nitrates but obviously since there is algae in the tank I know that's not necessarily true.
Anyway my question to all you experts is this.
I feel that the weakness of the tank is The sump it was a custom job and thus I do not use much filtration besides the Chaetomorpha.
I have one bag of purigen and one bag of chemi pure and a little fishies that has roasphos in it.
I'm thinking my problem is one of the following:
1. The miracle mud needs to be replaced as it has been a year or at least half of it should be.
2. My reef octopus skimmer is not cutting it.
3. General bad maintenance of the sump by me

Or possibly all three contributing to my algae.
I have lots of bristle worms a few snails one big emerald crab two Florida conchs and a white urchin but still end up with algae.
Come to think of it maybe my issue is the fact that my Auto top off which is a container that is 20 gallons always seems to suck salt water in the ro/di due to me not having a Proper check valve.

So what should I do to correct my issue should I invest in a better Skimmer? Just buy a check valve somy RO DI water is completely pure? Or something else?

Tank looks great to me. If you are having algae problems it has to be excess nutrients or phosphates.

Thanks Mike. I guess I'm a perfectionist and really not happy about the algae and why I have it. Just trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Btw I do weekly 10 gallon water changes.

How much and what do you feed?

I think you are right that it is a combo of at least one and three. What reef octopus skimmer do you use? Do you get good skim mate?

Thank you all valid questions.

I feed flake food 2 to 3 times a day. And by feeding its target feeding I dont just dump it in the tank I wait for the Kole tang to get a hold of a few flakes and the remainder is shared by the cleaner shrimp, 2 pajamas, 2 clowns, 1 orchid dottyback... Then once every two to three days I feed either frozen cube of mysis shrimp or some Rods frozen food... Then I feed krill once a week to my anemone and also target feed my serpent sea starfish... Honestly I feel like I under feed and the fish always go crazy when I do feed them so I almost feel like I am starving the poor things... Am I?

I use the:
[h=3]Reef Octopus Diablo XS 160 Protein Skimmer, It foams up and produces mostly clear greenish water with very little dirty skimmate...[/h]
Today I am gonna go buy a backflow thing for my RODI water so it doesn't suck saltwater into my RO water. And honestly what I wanted to buy when my birthday comes up (i've saved a few $$$) was an apex controller but now I wrote this to see if maybe my money would be better spent either buying a better skimmer? or maybe just completely getting rid of my sump and buying a better sump (as both those options are less money or equal to an apex...

Anyway please feel free to ask any more questions to help diagnose the problem, I can also provide some pictures of my trouble areas in a bit to show you the "real" tank as that picture is not what I see when I look at my tank... I see the algae and all problems...

Ok just took this pics a few min ago showing the disgusting algae.

Found out my alk was low I guess it was 6 (like to keep it around 8... So dosing 25cc's for the next 4 days with no calcium (was 410) to bring it up to acceptable levels... Guess my test kit is old, LFS did the newest test.
