Okay first of all I have a Marineland 93 gallon cube, And a 30 gallon custom sump. I have two MP 10 power heads a reef octopus skimmer I have a chamber filled with Chaetomorpha algae and miracle mud.
The tank is doing good was established about a year ago I have a very healthy rose bubble tip anemone has been healthy now for over a month, I have plenty of zoanthids, Many other Corals and not too many fish.
I am having an issue with algae some green hair and also some Cyanobacteria. When I run my tests I don't have any phosphates and I don't have any nitrates but obviously since there is algae in the tank I know that's not necessarily true.
Anyway my question to all you experts is this.
I feel that the weakness of the tank is The sump it was a custom job and thus I do not use much filtration besides the Chaetomorpha.
I have one bag of purigen and one bag of chemi pure and a little fishies that has roasphos in it.
I'm thinking my problem is one of the following:
1. The miracle mud needs to be replaced as it has been a year or at least half of it should be.
2. My reef octopus skimmer is not cutting it.
3. General bad maintenance of the sump by me
Or possibly all three contributing to my algae.
I have lots of bristle worms a few snails one big emerald crab two Florida conchs and a white urchin but still end up with algae.
Come to think of it maybe my issue is the fact that my Auto top off which is a container that is 20 gallons always seems to suck salt water in the ro/di due to me not having a Proper check valve.
So what should I do to correct my issue should I invest in a better Skimmer? Just buy a check valve somy RO DI water is completely pure? Or something else?
