i probably should have gone with a 36" 4 bulb or 24" 6-bulb.
Help me decide which T5 fixture for 40g Breeder

You can cut down the light intensity of the 6 bulb fixture with your bulb selection, raising the fixture higher off the tank, arranging your LR to have shaded areas and using the acrylic shield for the 36" 6 bulb TEK fixture. The acrylic shield will cut down the par and life of the bulbs a bit, but will also protect the bulbs and reflectors from salt spray. I'm happy with the fixture and can keep sps, lps, zoas and clams in my 40 breeder.

ATI 6 bulb for the color and you can always hang them a bit higher so not to cook your corals

+1 I run an over driven 4 bulb over my 40 breeder and I almost think it's too much sometimes. 16" deep with around 1 1/2"-2" of sand leaves only 14" of water depth. My lights are only around 3" off the water though. I have some SPS half way and have no problems providing light. The 6 bulb would be almost as much as my 4 bulb, but with better color/bulb options. Good luck!!!You might also consider a 24" fixture... you'll cook coral over a 40 breeder with a 36" 6 bulb T5 considering how shallow 40 breeders are... especially ATI PM.
A 24" will more than light the whole tank, and you can have "lower-light" areas on the right and left side... it wouldn't be visible to the eye, but the intensity on the coral will be substantially different allowing better (more) placement for acans and such... just a thought
