So my birthday is coming up and I was thinking about getting myself a pretty nice camera...but I know next to nothing about what is a good one and what is a bad one. Can anyone suggest a good camera? Would like it to be in the $300 range. thank you!

I'm still looking around the first link looks a little tooo good, wife got me one on sale at a local BJ's

My wife and I just purchased a D3300 as our first dslr last weekend and it has been fantastic thus far. Really worth spending a few extra bucks on.

I found 3200 in the mid 300's are you opposed to a model lower?

The gentlemen who educated me about dslr cameras did so with one of his own 3200s. We did a side by side comparison of the two models and there were only a few differences. Not being a photography geek, they didn't seem major to me. All I know is our new camera takes incredible pictures and I have barely scratched the surface regarding the use of this equipment. As one novice to another, I would say that for $300 you would be getting a very cool new toy.

Well I got a lot of gift cards for my birthday so I ended up getting a Nikon D3300 with a 18-5mm lens and a 55-200mm lens.

This is the same package we picked up. It has a bit of s learning curve compared to a point and shoot but learning how to shoot in manual mode has allowed us to take pictures we could never get with the cameras we have owned previously.

Got any tips?

This video did a pretty job of familiarizing us with the features of the camera.

After you start to learn how to navigate the menus and figure out the features than its time to just start shooting pictures. Take a ton of pictures and mess around with ISO, apature and shutter speed settings than compare the shots.

One thing that helped me was figuring out how the ISO settings work. The higher you have the ISO setting, the brighter the picture will be but the film "grain" becomes more prominent as it increases as well.

How is your new toy treating you?
It is awesome! Went to the national aquarium a few days ago and got some amazing photos! Still getting better at taking photos of my tank but I am getting better.
