Hi all,

Could you guys please help me identify this brownish substance on my substrate?
I keep reading various descriptions of algae but I would like to see if someone can confirm for me.
It's doesn't look like much because I have just vacuumed the substrate.

Diatoms and will eventually dissipate. In the mean time, you can add clean up crew (snails such as turbo, nassarius, astrea, trochus and about 6 blue leg hermits)

Defiantly diatoms, I also got worried as well when it I encountered it as I thought I did something wrong. It should subside with keeping up on proper maintenance and getting all your nitrate levels in check.

It looks like diatoms. Is your tank relatively new?

Hi guys, yes this tank is relatively new. It has live rock from an established tank. However, the Protein Skimmer is till breaking in, and the refugium doesn't have all its chaeto yet. I am running GFO in a reactor.

If it is Diatoms then I am not overly worried, and that once all the filtration is established it will dissipate.

Careful on GFO. While it keeps Phos in check, ferric Oxide os very strong and can deplete salt elements quickly

Yea just let it run its course and it should be fine.
