Hello-

I'm trying to identify some green algae in my tank. Just for a little background, the it's been setup for just over two months and cycled for over a month.

The tank already went through a brown algae and green hair agea phase, but now it's got a new type of algae that I cannot identify. It's very bright green and actually kinda cool looking. It's also much hard to scrape off the glass compared the previous types, and my snails don't seem to eat it. Anyone know what this is?

Looks like cyanobacteria.

system looks new and it usually is the first thing you see in a new reef especially on dead rock. It usually burns itself out after a while.

Yeah, the system is still new- approaching three months old. Honestly, I'm not convinced it's cyano. I have a patch of red cyano, and it's more mat like and stringy. It's also much easier to remove but maybe the green stuff is different. Based on some posts of others with similar algae, I think it's just green film algae with a bit of hair algae still in the mix.

I would just throw a good clean up crew. Turbos and scarlet crabs.

I already have some critters in there. I probably need to add more but want to do so slowly.

Since my original post, I've added some powerheads to the lower in the tank to help with some of the dead spots created by the gyres. I'm also consistently doing weekly 10% water changes. With no livestock in the tank, I was less diligent in that regard. So far, it's helping. The red cyano has faded away, and the green stuff- whatever it is- seems to be fading as well.
