I just got an 8 bulb T5 in a trade and I intend on putting it over my frag tank.

As with most used equipment you never really know how long they've been running.

Some of the sockets are acting funky, and I want to re-wire it just to be safe and possibly increase the performance.

I am not an electrician by any means but I'm great at figuring this type of stuff out, I just need some good links or videos.

Can you send me a pic of the current setup? Do you have new sockets? Do you need wire nuts or need to cut wires? Need to see what your working with

I haven't bought any supplies mainly because I'm not sure where to start, it's currently setup over my tank and working, I just think the sockets are a bit cheaper than what I've seen in my old ATI fixture

I think your best bet would just be to rewire new sockets. It sounds like unless you replace them you'll be worried about it so I would just go ahead and replace the sockets. Take it to a radio shack or a friend in robotics or electronics class lol

Rewiring a t5 socket is super easy. Basically, you'll want to remove the housing to expose the 8 sockets fully. You can purchase new replacement sockets at local or big box hardware fairly cheap. Once the case is open, you can slide each socket out, one at a time and replace. In order to replace there should be a way to slide a small pointy object in that will release the wire then simply slide the same wire into the proper place on new socket. To prevent any confusion, just do one socket at a time and only disconnect and reattach one wire at a time. I'll attach a video (not mine) of someone performing the wire removal and attachment to better depict what I mean.

2 different style t5 sockets, however both follow the same removal and installation principle.

Not my videos. Just some quick informative ones I found.
AWESOME!!! That's exactly what I was looking for! Could be a great thread for people looking to do this or retrofit, I haven't found much info like this.
