Sorry for the bad picture. My reef crashed about a month ago and this is one that I thought did not make it. It was bone white with algae growing on it. I left it because It is attached to a magnetic frag plug on the back wall. I was going to scrub it off and glue a coral to it like a shelf. One day I was cleaning and noticed it was getting color back and gets more color daily! But it’s got hair algae all over in spots. What’s the best way to help it out? The middle small part has the most new growth but the outer edges are starting to expand as well.

#reefsquad lets see if we can save this coral! Are you able to physically pull any of the hair algae off it?

I did try a tooth brush. This hair algae is nasty stuff. I have it in other spots also. It’s impossible to pull off it’s to slimy and seems to be firmly rooted. On my rocks I have to use a stiff brush and scrub hard. I am waiting for my scrubber to kick back in.

It’s still pretty white and not even close to getting full color back. Is it still ok to frag pieces not fully recovered or should I wait and keep fighting then algae back until it’s healthier?

I have never fragged a montipora before. It was super brittle and broke into several tiny sliver sized pieces. I glued several of them together on a plug and one sliver on a section of live rock so we will see what happens.

Just leave it alone; it will heal up and overgrow the algae.

One of mine from a year ago (it looked far worse a couple weeks prior to this picture)

Now it's exponentially larger and doing great (center of the tank in this pic)
