All I can say is what worked for me, I added a DIY ATS and my nitrates dissapeared in just over a week.
I can't say enough about my $30 investment that has turned into a beast of an ATS

Natural, which includes refugium with macro algae, turf scrubber, carbon dosing

It depends on where your nitrates are coming from, how you're getting rid of them, and any number of different factors. To help lower them, we really need to know more about your tank:

• How big is the tank?
• What is in the tank?
• How much do you feed the tank?
• What do you currently do for nutrient export?
• What does your CUC look like?
• How much are you willing to spend?
• What are your current nitrates?
• What do you want them to be?
• What is your general maintenance program?

Natural vs. chemical doesn't really matter, but each has different side effects that you need to consider before using them.
