So, i guess this will be my first post, So hello to all. I currently have a 2 meter tank, 850L (220G) tank, It has been running for about 3 years but with lots of problems in between. Currently the tank is stable but with Red Turf algae growing wherever there is light (LR only). Any case i decided to upgrade my tank to a 3 meter, 1300L (350G) tank. This new tank will replace my current setup in the exact same location. So this is my current problem, I wish to keep all my livestock, inc. my sps corals, however i do need to shut down the tank for a bout 4 weeks while we prepare the new tank. i cannot move existing tank anywhere else as it is too large, but i do have 300L (70G) setup that i can put together.

My plan so far is to start this 70g tank up and get about 50KG (110lbs) of LR in there for the next 2 months. Will be a fully running tank with skimmers and powerheads, just no sand. The idea is 2 cycle new LR. Closer to when i need to shutdown my existing tank, i will transfer all corals and fish into this tank for a period of about 1 month, maybe a bit longer as that is how long i need to setup new tank. Once that is done i was planning on removing old LR and putting it in a large Bin with powerheads, heaters and existing water, but no lights. I assume for about 6 weeks in this container The LR will be fine but with no lights the algae could be killed off. Will be doing water changes on both the temp tank as well the LR Bin weekly as well. I will try and get the water parameters to be the same or close as possible.

Once the new tank is ready, New Sand and LR from both temp tank and bins will be placed in new tank with maybe 50% of water from both temp tank and LR Binand thereafter Livestock to follow. My question to you gurus out there, do you think this is a good plan or am i asking for more problems. I really do not want to sell off any old Livestock as i love them all. But i do not wish to go through the same hell that i did with existing Tank.

I don't know specifics ovbiously but personally I think that it is a better idea to "upgrade" over the course of 24-48 hours than stuffing too many fish in too small of a tank for a period of over a month.

I say the best way would be to get everything ready for the new setup and move the old tank out and out the new in with as little in between as possible. Livestock could be housed in clean trash cans and/or buckets until the install is done. Remember, the new tank just has to be up to temp and have decent parameters with some flow to be a functioning system. The filtration and lighting could be worked out over the next couple days. Maybe a weekend job?

Thanks for the reply, however, the current tank needs to be dismantled, my electrical needs to be re done due to larger tank being in the way and the new tank will be built on site which alone will be over a week, So there is my current problem.
