Help My Berta has been weird

Can anyone help diagnose what my betta has?
He has gotten pale but still breathing

Check your water params.
Does the betta have any tankmates?
What is your water change routine?
How well aerated is the water?

No tank mates
Just died today
I think it may have been ammonia poisoning
I change it every week or so

It is relatively new (Early August)
He was going pale around 2 weeks ago, but still swimming. I read it had something to do with stress.
Then yesterday he just went down and this morning I found him dead

Have you tested water params? How often do you do water changes?
With no new additions, it’s unlikely any disease was introduced.

Nothing sticks out there - pH is higher than bettas thrive at, but I’ve kept them at similar with no issues.
Any recent changes to the tank?

It got contaminated with something

With what? If any bad toxins got in that would be a problem.

Not the food, the water.
My dad told me (I was out that day) he had put dog food in thr container I water change with and he used it on a water change (it was empty when he water changed)

That could be an issue depending on how much got in. Bettas tend to do rather well with dirty water but that much could cause a problem.
Does the tank have a good filter?

Add some extra carbon just to be safe. I'm not sure dog food would be a contaminant per se since I know people feed it to koi, etc... (I didn't say they were the smartest people, lol, but still...)

He started going slightly pale before it.
It is a half carbon filter, but I don’t really like carbon, so i take it out.
