So about a week ago I purchased a green star polyp, brought it home, drip acclimated it and gave it a coral dip to remove any hitch hikers. After about a day in the aquarium all was good, he was coming out (for the most part) and retracted at night. He stayed on this schedule for about a week when all of a sudden he won't come out at all! Invert nervous as to why he won't come out and I really don't want him to die! I tested my parameters and all were in check. As shown in the picture below:

Here's a picture of him in daylight:

And this is what he looked like THE DAY BEFORE he retracted:

Don't stress too much about it, mine has gone periods of almost a week without opening. I have 2 frags in my tank currently, right next to each other, yet 1 is constantly open the other one just randomly opens when it feels like.

So the coral isn't dying rather so just experiencing a normal thing?

Thats a picture of mine currently. The one on the right is the one that randomly opens when it feels like (had the stubborn frag for like 5 months now) and the other is more recently purchased (~month ago).

I have also noticed that when my GSP is about spread it will retract for a couple days and then go crazy on growth. I wouldn't worry to much, GSP is way to hardy :)

I'd kill that aptasia growing on the GSP. GSP is a very hardy coral it should be fine once it acclimates.

Yes, I will be killing it with Aptasia-X. Is that safe? The reason I didn't use it yet is because I don't want to hinder the GSP anymore if it is already under stress

How long does it close up for?

usually 2-3 days, usually its my smaller colony of GSP.... i have a 3x3 that closes all the time, and a colony on a 5lb rock that never closes, its a wierd coral :) but i wouldnt worry. If it stays closed for more than a few weeks I would move it to another location in the tank.

Alright thanks for your help! Happy reefing

Here is mine currently....

Starfish loves to jump on it when it's retracted.

You will notice that my poor green button at the top is running for its life but the GSP just keeps on going.

Mine close up as well for periods of time. I don't think it would hurt to take a turkey baster to it sometimes to blow off anything that's settled on it as well.
