new to the saltwater scene..i have built a 46 gallon 3/8 rimless tank and would like an honest answer on refugium sump size. Thank you in advance for any advice.

I don't think there's a rule of thumb. Having a sump is better than not is the only rule that i have been given. The bigger the better but not at the expense of functionality! For example, I wish my west side of my cabinet had room for dosers and top off to truly keep my wet and electrical separate.

If you want to put sump inside cabinet then there are some dimension constraints.
I like deeper sump than shallow. However do mind of equipments that you will put in that sump: how to access and clean them given the cabinet height and plumbing system.

I have plenty on depth and about 28 inches length..can go as high as 24 inches on height
