I bought healthy assorted frags from Petco, but this one here is dying! He’s turning green and shriveling. Is he just stressed or should I be concerned?

There shouldn’t be any reason it’s dying. I had a snail that died a week ago which caused an ammonia spike but I cleaned the tank before I added the coral. These weren’t very cheap and I’d hate to lose them! What do I do?!

Give it a couple of days to adjust itself to your water & lighting. Leathers are cranky and throw fits with change. It should perk back up just fine.
Ok, thanks. I’m just a little worried because A: they were kind of abused at Petco, and B: there was a dead snail in my tank that raised the ammonia levels. I’ve had a leather get mad before and shrink, but this looks different, very green and flaky, so I just wanted to be sure everything was okay, I’ll keep observing.

PS- what type is it? Devils hand? It doesn’t have any polyps like the other leathers so I don’t know what species it could be.

It does look like devil’s hand to me. You’re not seeing polyps because it’s angry right now. Do you have recent readings of your parameters?

I have a devils hand that sheds every time it's moved. Even if it's just a little bit. Some times they stay only "half Infalted" for a week which isn't a big deal they'll either shed or open right back up eventually. Mushy life haha.

I've had my Lobophytom look bruised before after knocking into it while cleaning the tank and it looked upset for a week and went back to normal.

Keep us updated!

Thanks! I thought it was a devils hand. It didn’t have any polyps out in the store either but was also pressed up to fifteen other types of leather coral.

I checked the parameters a few weeks ago which were at 0.5 ppm ammonia because of my decaying snail that just died.

How about this one? Is it okay? I don’t know what it is, but it only has half-extended polyps, so maybe it’s just the way it.

Toadstool. Leathers are pretty much bulletproof, and will often look like they are dying. I've had major shrivelling and they come back bigger...just let them do their thing. keepthings stable

That’s a nice one!
The coral is starting to come back. Unfortunately I ticked off a toadstool when cleaning some algae off, so now he’s all shrunken. I’ll give an update on the corals tomorrow morning!

PS - by the way, anyone know where I can find a (preferably inexpensive) frogspawn/hammer/torch coral? I know they’re hard to come by right now. I saw a healthy and big one at Petco for $50 about a month ago, but when I went again, they didn’t have any except a micro torch for $80. They did have a tempting 6” green leather for $40, but i didn’t get it. Any thoughts on the torch/frogspawn/hammer though?

They do this regularly especially when stressed or shedding/molt.
Assure water quality is good and moderate light and water flow

Loads of good online retailers but you will spend 40 to 50 on shipping in most situations turning ur 50 dollar coral into a 100 dollar adventure
