I had a 40B in my office which was doing quite well. For various reasons, 2 weeks ago, I decided to break it down and bring it home and turn it into frag tank. I got it home and set it up, threw away all the sand and kept the live rock, most of which went into the sump with a few pieces in the tank. Since then it hasn't seemed happy, corals aren't doing well and it has been kind of cloudy. I woke up this morning and it is incredibly cloudy and the skimmer is going crazy. I can't for the life of me figure out what is going on.

Livestock:
2 Darwin's Ocellaris
1 coral banded shrimp
Small serpent star
Some snails and hermits

Parameters (Friday night)
Salinity: 35 ppt
DKH: 10
PO4: 0
Ca2+: 450
Amm: 0
NO2: 0

Any ideas?

Thanks.

It is going through a bacterial bloom,..something you added or even the tank/equipment just being exposed to the air has caused it. It will go away on its own with time. I am not sure the impact it will have on your inhabitants, maybe someone else will chime in.

Ditto on the algae bloom. My new tank went through an algae bloom for @2-3 days. I believe mine was from adding more media to my biopellet reactor. It should clear up on it's own pretty soon. I also had to clean out my skimmer a lot more during the bloom. It hasn't had any effects on any of my stock. Hope this helps with your situation.

Just let it run the coarse. May have been caused when you threw away the old sand. You also threw away the good bacteria that was in the sand and it had to be replaced, hence the bloom.
