Help pick fish for my JBJ 30g Rimless

As of right now I am looking at a pair of clownfish and a goby/pistol combo. Everything else is up for grabs.

Give some suggestions of cool fish that would work well with the dimensions that I am working with (23.6x19.8x16.7).

Also, how many fish should I house to keep it ethical?

+ 100 for the goby/pistol shrimp combo, and don't forget you don't have to spend $60 on a fancy goby for it to be entertaining. I would say that your list - minus the flame angel- would make for a very nice tank. I know people do it, but I think 30 is too small for a flame angel.

Haha, I have always wanted a Yasha goby and pistol pair. I have had yellow, diamond, wheeler's... Time for something a little different.

I do understand the Flame Angel, and it is on my verge of being pushed off my list. I housed one great in a Solana (34g) for a couple of years and it added so much vibrance and movement that I wanted one again. I just want to be ethical in my fish choices.

If I were just throwing caution to the wind and putting whatever in there, I would buy a baby yellow tang and put it in there because those are my favorite fish. Unfortunately that cannot happen.

What type of clowns? A mated pair of clowns can/will take over a tank that size.

Trex, I have thought long and hard about that very thing. I wondered if it would be better to have one clown, but then it would turn female and be aggressive as well. More than likely I will be going with Black/White Ocellaris, true Occellaris, or Perculas. I do not think I am going to go fancy with any Onyx, Snowflack, etc...

I have had great luck with the b/w ocellaris being very good tank mates.

However, I am open to suggestions as to what type would fit well.

IMO/E, a single clown (( regardless of species )) is always less aggressive than a spawning pair (( of the same species )). Though, a spawning pair of Percs, will be (( at least should be )) less aggressive than a single Cinnamon clown.

Is this tank a cube type tank? If so, I would stick with either Percs or O's (( any variety )). Also, if this is a cube type, I would stick with one of the smaller dwarf angels -- C. argi or C. acanthops/aurantonotus -- the others (( including a Flame )) tend to get too big for a cube, and in turn get more aggressive.

Trex, it is not a cube in the direct sense of the word. I guess it is cube like though.

I housed a flame in a Solana (20x20x20) for around a year or longer before I had to sell my equipment.I just figured it would have a few more inches of swim room to work with in the new JBJ rimless

Right now I am looking at the following livestock other than maybe pair of cleaner shrimp and CUC:
Clown- may forgo the pair and get a nice Onyx or Snowflake, something like that
Yasha goby/ pistol combo
Flasher Wrasse, not sure which sub species yet
I would LOVE to have a Mandarin if I could supplement the pods for it
and finally the Flame, unless I go another route and may get a flasher wrasse combo


How does this sound for my dimensions. Also, I will have 30lbs of Manado rock, 40lbs of Caribsea AragAlive fiji pink sand

I have a midas blenny in my Jbj 28 and he's my favorite so far,a lot of personality and always out swimming.

I had a goby pistol shrimp pair a while ago and I hated it, the shrimp got big and made a mess in my tank. He burried frags, pulled things around, and messed up my sandbed on a daily basis.

I would also not recomend a flame angel due to the fact that some of them will eat your coral I had this happen and went crazy trying to get the thing out of my tank. I also had the same problem with sexy shrimp they loved munching on my blue cespit coral

Yeah, as much as I love the colors of the Flame I think I am going to mark it off my list. I will have a good bit of acans and SPS and that will probably be a nice feeding ground for the Flame. Especially if I add a clam to the mix.

My list now seems to be:
Clownfish- Probably just black/white oce
Yasha/pistol combo
Flasher Wrasse
And if I can find one, an ORA Mandarin that eats prepared foods

Sounds like a better list --- I currently have 6 dwarf angels, and they all have one thing in common -- love fleshy LPS, like acans.

Be aware that the track record for the ORA mandirans isn't that great, still need a ton of pods.

I was planning on having a refugium area in the "sump" to grow pods in for a few weeks before I add the Mandarin. That way I figure I will have a nice established population plus the ability to feed mysis and the like if I can find one that will accept those foods.

Chaeto a good medium for pod growth?

Chaeto will work fine, but it is going to take more than a few weeks to get the population established, at first you will have a population explosive, then a die off, and then the population should level off to the carrying capicity of your tank. Figure on that taking a couple of months.

I had a non Ora mandarin in my tank that I trained to eat frozen foods and even some pellets but in the end he still did not get enough food and I ended up giving him away. I also had a small refugium set up in the back of my Jbj and I would ad live pods from time to time. I really don't think they can be kept in small systems.

That is a bummer...I really love those fish. They have such beauty and character.

Eric, I was planning on doing the same as you. Turing the back into a refugium and then adding pods about every two weeks to keep the population at an optimum level. I have a local store that says they have a couple eating prepared foods, so we will see. Worst case, I will give it to an established tank with a lot of rock.
