Folks,

I tried a search, but kept getting an ODBC error? My apologies if this has been answered elsewhere! I have a new NYOS 220, and tying to figure out a good starting point for initial setup. Currently, it is overflowing like mad in my tank, with the collection cup on or off. I'm not sure what is a good starting point with retards to how many turns from closed I should use/how much air I should add from open to closed. I'd appreciate any advice!!

Thanks!!

Nyos usually does not require a break in.

Open the air screw all the way up. Use the open close knob to raise the water level to the neck where the cup twist on at. You should just be able to see the water just over the plastic. You can then start to close the air screw until it just starts to raise the water. That’s for normal operations.

If you’re still over flowing at this point, dial it back until output is manageable in the cup. You will have to run it like this until the skimmer catches up on the proteins in the water. May take 3-10 hours depending on flow and tank size.

As it starts to settle, start working the water up the neck.

Just a slight correction on this Jay, I think anyway, if you agree? You open the ‘air screw’ all the way open but then it’s the ‘adjustment screw’ (the long tube with the adjustment screw on top as well), not the ‘air screw’ that you close to start and raise the water level. I think this is correct and as per the manual.

You might find that during the first few days it’s easier to close the air screw down until the skimmer stops over skimming and then just open the air screw a little bit every hour/day or so until it’s fully open and the skimmer is working correctly

I’ve been running the Nyos 160 for a few years and now have the 300 as well

Yep. I open the air intake screw all the way open then use the open/close knob to get the water level in the general ballpark. Then can use air intake screw to adjust once it settles.

Every time I close the air intake screw my water column shoots up. I tried following the manual but could never get it tuned right. Watched some YouTube videos and seen this method. It worked for me. Haven’t adjusted my skimmer in 5 months.

Thanks guys, I have the small air screw, so that there is about a 1/4" gap to the small plastic pipe. The larger knob, I bleiev controls water level. Closing it all the way will cause the skimmer to overflow more, so I have it open a few turns currently. Please see pic below:

You can try turning the big knob (open/close) open until you get it to stop over flowing. Open will drop the water level in the skimmer neck. You want it to kick out some bubble but not overflow if you can.

Right now you have to much in the water to run the skimmer at what will be the normal settings.

Ok, so opening up the the big knob should help lower the water level in the skimmer?

Yep. Just keep in mind opening either will lower the water level. Closing either will raise it. Air inlet screw only has so much useable adjustment. Maybe a quarter inch or so. After a 1/4” or so past open that one doesn’t seem to do much that I’ve noticed.

Thanks. I have both the air screw and the big knob open all the way. It's still over flowing as shown in the pic above. Skimmer is in 8" of water. Should I lower or raise the amount of water it sits in?

8” should be fine. If both are open all the way you may have to ride it out for a hour or 2. It should start to slow down on the overflowing as it catches up. Must be something in the water it really likes.

I’ve ran mine from 8” to 10” with no tuning issues.

It will. Each tank is different for nutrients. You should see a small production spike when lights come on, lights go out, sometimes feedings and adding phyto from my own experiences.

It's a brand new tank. Going to add bacteria to start the cycle tonight. Combination of dry and live rock.

Thanks again for all your advice and help!

My Nyos 220 skimmer was working great until I had to shut it off to repair the stand it sits on in the refugium. It dried out on the inside and after I restarted it, it will not stop over-flowing even with the water and air control knobs fully open. This has been going on a nearly a week with no settling down. HELP!
