Hi folks,

I was checking out my yellow tang today. There are some clear stringy things hanging out of his anus. Looks like one of my blue chromis might have it too. The tang's color is faded around his face as well.

Any suggestions as to treatment? I hear you can buy medicated food. (He's a voracious eater, as is the chromis). Or would it be better to treat the water itself? Both?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Metroplex and praziquantel in a QT tank. Treat seperately and start with the Metroplex. You can soak the food in the Metroplex but use Seachem Focus to bind it to the food. You can also soak food in the praziquantel, but better off not mixing medications. Some may recommend garlic additives or foods with garlic as well. Fish like to recycle poop so treat all of your fish.

Some people say you should not treat prazipro in the display tank, others say you can. If you can remove the fish and treat you should.
How ever I treated prazipro in my display with sps and lps. With no negative side affects. I have star fish and shrimp. But if you have feather dusters it will most likely kill them. If you dicide to treat in tank, don't make a habbit out of it.

+1, praziquantel is reef safe but most likely won't eliminate internal parasites. It will kill off feather dusters and other inverts possibly. I've never had any issues treating tanks with SPS/LPS other than the skimmer overflowing until a big water change is done. Praziquantel will also cause loss of appetite and from the looks of the HLLE and internal worms/parasites it may be best to start with Metroplex

Thanks for the info. Do I add the PraziPro to their food as well?

You could add a couple drops of praziquantel to a couple ounces of RODI water and use it to keep on hand to soak food in. Again I would recommend starting with Metroplex and Focus first for a few treatments until no worms/stringy white poop is present. Then do 3 treatment rounds of Prazi and monitor further. Best of Luck

Is the stringy poop white or clear?

Around the face could be HLLE: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/hlle-head-lateral-line-erosion.259916/

It's clear.

The color loss may be due to the fact that he was the only survivor of a tragedy that happened with my tank while we were out of the house for the Thanksgiving holiday. The circuit breaker that powers the tank had tripped while we were away. (We had an electrician come out and the problem has been fixed). When we got back, the water in the tank was about 55 degrees. Lost all of my livestock except for this tang. He looked a lot paler last week. His color has been returning since.

Sorry to hear this. I wouldn't take any action unless you see white stringy poop. For now, I would just help him recuperate by feeding lots of nori and vitamin enriched foods.

So...don't treat him? Will it hurt to put some Metroplex and Focus in with some frozen food, just as a prevantative precaution?

He's been getting nori on a clip every day.
I've also ordered some Rod's Food, which should be here Friday. Does Rod's have the vitamins that I need, or should I get some other type of vitamin-enriched food as well?

Thanks,

-Breck

I think the idea here, it to have him recuperate from the temp accident before treating for anything else. Vitamins you can add to the food include things like Selcon or Vitachem (as examples).
