HELP! Protein Skimmer

So, I recently acquired my first saltwater tank off Craigslist for an awesome deal! Sadly it came with a canister filter as its source of filtration. Although I have an AIO tank waiting to be set up, I’m wondering if a protein skimmer will do me any good on my current set up? And is it okay to run a skimmer in the actual tank itself?

What size are the aquariums? How large is the compartments where the skimmers have to go?
