Help Required!... FileFish has developed Pop-Eye

Good evening,

I came back this evening to find my FileFish has developed Pop-Eye! Was okay yesterday...

I believe its had a scuff with my Yellow Wrasse as i have known the Wrasse to be aggressive towards the Filefish when he enters his territory.

I am in the process of cycling a Reefer 425xl so all fish will have much bigger territories but for now my poor injured Filefish..

His eye has swollen on Oneside with a white Haze believe its just happened as he is shook up and not happy.

I am quickly firing up a quarantine tank for him for treatment just mixing some salt..

What's everyone's advise to best treat this pop eye see video below:

I have read some forums and seen either Maracyn-1 or Seachem Kanaplex which will help with the treatment, also read you can add Epsom Salt to help with the swelling..

Has anyone tried these treatments before, is this the best way to treat this pop-eye?

QT w Kanaplex.

What are your tank params?

anything that could be attacking the filefish?

I dont think Popeye just happens on its own.

Parameters are good.

Salinity 1.026
Ammonia <0.15
Nitrate 1ppm
Mg - 1200 (Dosing to achieve 1280)
Kh - 3.3, 9.2
Calcium - 460
pH - 8.15
PO3 - 0

All other fish are perfectly well.

My Yellow Wrasse keeps attacking him when the Filefish goes near his territory, i think a scrap happened when i was away from home today.

one may need to go if it continues. That fighting can lead to popeye like this or worse. either way for now put into QT so file can rest and heal without being harassed

I got some API Melafix coming tomorrow, cant order Kanaplex or Maracyn-1 in the UK.

Will order some for stock.

Once healed i will place him in the new tank and then i will monitor my Yellow Wrasse when i introduce him to the new Reef tank and one will definitely have to go.

If so, then it is likely due to a mechanical injury. Aside from possible secondary bacterial infections, fish often heal from this on their own.

The Epsom salt idea only works for freshwater fish - in marine aquariums, Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) are the fourth most common salt, so the fish are already bathing in it, adding a bit wore in a dip won't help.

Thanks Jay,

He hasn't eaten tonight as I think it happened early this evening and I was moving him into a QT tank but will try to feed him tomorrow he was absolutely fine last night eating and didn't have it then.

And yeah just the one one effected.

This is good to know thank you, I am going to treat him with API Malifex just in case it turns bacterial for a week then when he heals I will return him to his new home in the Reefer 425xl which he will have more space to swim and keep out of the way of the wrasse which is very territorial and I think that's what happened he tried to attack the filefish and he's clipped himself on a rock or something..

And ahh okay thanks for the advice hes in fresh salt water in QT going to get some rock and seed with bacteria boost so I won't get an ammonia spike whilst he is in QT then will wash the rock off and put into my sump so I can use if I need to QT again..

Fingers crossed he will be okay just needs some peace to replace and heal

Maracyn or Api is the way to go with eye injuries, look for the active ingredient is Erythromycin or another product with that in it
