So as posted earlier i got a protein skimmer along with my setup, the guy i got it from just had it running from the overflow into the skimmer with no pump. Reading the owners manual this is an option but a pump is still required. Well, along with the protein skimmer I got a mag drive model 7. IMO this is not enough return for a 125g tank just my opinion though. I broke the down tubes tonight, and they have basically air tubes poking out the top that were broken off in the fall. My plan is to make two new down tubes out of pvc. My first question, do I need those two needle like air holes? Second, I want to use the mag drive pump for this skimmer, is it necessary to have a needle wheel to use it in the skimmer? the owners manual says it originally came with one but i didn't get it in the deal. The owners manual says i have two options in pumps and I'm just not buying that. You can see in the pic that there is three tubes, the two closest to the bottom both go to the pump, then there is one that T's and it is fed either by the overflow or by a mini-pump. My question is why? I don't really understand this design and wondering if can't just get rid of the tube at the very bottom and just have the skimmer fed from water in my sump. Thank you.
