I have an acrylic 225 Gal tank 60" x 36" x 24", It has a corner overflow in only one corner approx 9" x 9", It has 4 holes that I have installed bulkhead fittings. there are 2ea 1 1/2" and 2ea 1", I want to make this as quiet as possible. Sump is 75 gal. I have looked at diagrams on here for the Herbie system and that looks like the way to go. So question is do I put a valve on only 1 of the 1 1/2" downpipes which would be approx 6" below the other for regulating flow and use the other as the high overflow just under the notches in the overflow and then use the 2ea 1" pipes as emergency overflow? Sorry kind of long winded but thought I should give as much detail as possible.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Oh also thought I should mention the return pumps I have should push approx 1500-1800 gallons per hour. I have 2ea. Coralife turbo sea 1270's but with 90's and head I will loose some of that.

I would go with a Bean Animal instead of a Herbie. Use a 1 1/2" for the full siphon, a 1" for the trickle drain, a 1 1/2" for the emergency. You could then use the other 1" for a return.

Brew12 thanks for the reply I had not seen the Bean Animal. I'm reading through the Bean Animal thread but have an issue. My overflo is inside of the tank in the corner and extends all the way to the bottom and I do not have space for the T's and 90 deg. down turned or upturned ends. Will this design still work if all 3 pipes come straight up but have different height to the tops? I could have the siphon line 4" down and the open channel slightly above or even with the siphon and have the Emergency an inch or two above? Will this also work?

Thanks

You don’t need to make the BeanAnimal that complicated. I use the Herbie style full syphon (straight pipe with a strainer on top, roughly 6” below the overflow water level. My open channel (really a Durso) loops over the top of the full syphon. Emergency drain is another straight pipe just cresting the overflow water level.

The full siphon can be as low as you want it. You want the partial drain at the water level you want in the overflow. The emergency should be about an inch higher than that. The only pipe that really benefits from having a 90 on it is the partial drain, but it isn't needed. It will just be slightly louder.

You can bean without the elbows but it may be more difficult to dial in. You will likely want a screen on the main drain. Try it and if it doesn't dial in well, Herbie is always an option.

Here is a shot from the backside of my installation (prior to filling with water). Took about 3 adjustments of the full syphon gate valve to dial it in. Have rarely touched it in a year plus.

That's perfect thanks for the picture I do have space for this configuration.

Thank you!

Thanks to everyone for their help on this. Bean system is set up and running great 1500 plus GPH and almost completely silent.
