okay so here's the story. I recently got a large diamond watchman goby for my 55g tank. He instantly started sifting sand and the tank has been cloudy for days due to the sand storms he's causing. The last day I noticed my eilbli angelfish hiding in a corner and he's staying in one cave and won't come out. Today I noticed he's not eating and his whole body looks like it's covered in dust. I don't want to say it's velvet bc the goby has caused a sand storm so the dust could be sticking to him. I'm concerned. His side fins look torn has well and it looks like there's dust falling offf the fins. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If it were just sand stuck to him, he wouldn't be hiding excessively and the fins wouldn't be torn up. If you can get the angel out and into a clean tank, you'll be able to observe his behavior better and see if the dusting on him is just sand or velvet. In fact, a freshwater dip on the way to that tank will clear that up in about 5 minutes since the sand will mostly wash away in the dip. If it doesn't wash away then he needed the dip anyway since velvet attacks the gills first and the dip would have flushed out the gills buying him a bit of time.

Agreed.

If the fish is weakened from disease, parasite, or other ailment -- it may not have much of a slime cost to keep sand off of it as well.

Thank you. It was too late my tang died and my angel fish and the goby. First time my whole tank got wiped out. I still have a black and white clown who is the only survivor. Do they get velvet or does it develop into brook.

Will I know have to run my tank without anything for 76 days bc velvet wiped it out?

This sounds like a velvet wipeout.

The clownfish needs to be QTd and treated with copper: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/copper-treatment.193343/

I would leave your DT fallow (fishless) for 76 days so you can get a "clean slate" in there.

Moving forward, I highly recommend QTing all future fish purchases: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-to-quarantine.189815/
