So I’ve been in the reef world for 15+ years and never had to quarantine a fish knock on wood. But recently my tomini tang I got from my lfs only one I’ve bought from for the past 9 years got ich. I now have been reading and have to quarantine all my fish in there luckily. It’s an open scape 90gallon and most of my fish will swim into the net without chasing them. But I’ve been reading about freshwater dips and copper and honestly it has me freaked out. What does a freshwater dip consist of. Just putting the fish in rodi water for 5 min. Or what. Sorry for the confusion and lack of knowledge on this and thank you in advance for all your help and advice!

I have never did a freshwater dip on a fish, but it won't fix your problem. I would recommend putting all of the fish in a seperate qt tank and running copper, while your display goes fallow. I've used cupramine successfully but most people say that copper power or copper safe are easier on the fish. Either way it's not hard as long as you can get them into an appropriately sized qt and have a good copper test kit (I'd strongly recommend Hanna checker).

hello! sorry you are experiencing this but I can offer some help to try and get you through this. If youre dealing with ich, set up a separate qt tank big enough to house all of your fish. You need to fallow your display tank or else the treatment will be useless, your display tank needs to be fishless for at least 76 days (I shoot for 90). As far as treating the fish, order yourself a hanna copper checker, some copper power, and praziquantel. treating with copper is not difficult, @jayhemdal has some amazing qt protocols please read up on those, he is a lifesaver. You need copper levels to be between 2.0-2.5, I shoot for 2.25 in case i add too much rodi to top the tank off or if the tank evaporate a little the copper doesn't get above 2.5, the fish needs to be in 2.0+ copper for 14-30 days, I aim for 30 days. If you need any more information just message me Ill be more than happy to help.

Thanks man I really appreciate your help it’s got me freaked out. It’s the only fish showing the symptoms of it and it’s not even the newest fish.

I always ask folks though - are you certain it is ich? If so, then as some of the others said, skip the FW dip and get the fish into full copper right away. You’ll need a good copper test kit. I like to use coppersafe, but others use copper power and Cupramine. With a new quarantine tank, you’ll need to be very careful that the ammonia doesn’t rise on you. If you had some bacteria seeded filter material from the main tank to move over, that might help.
How many spots does the tang have on it? Rough numbers…..

I’ll post some pictures of the fish when I get home. Everyone is eating great still tho and I forsure thought that my foxface would of gotten it first.

You got this. I would get him out and in qt if you can catch him to give him a fighting chance, Goodluck!!

Ok everyone here are some of the best pics I could get of moving fish I’ll try and take a video. No one has it but now both of my tangs. Both eating and acting normal as much as I can tell

Yep - pretty much that can only be ich on those tangs (I wasn't doubting you per-se, just I've gotten misdirected before and didn't want that to happen again). You are going to have some issues getting all those fish into a treatment tank for copper, and the copperband and leopard wrasse are NOT going to do well under those conditions, they really prefer a stable, mature tank.

Jay

So what do you recommend. I have some ruby reef. I can put all the coral in the tank next to it.
