Hey everyone.

I just got a good look at my new tomini tang that I have had for a few days, because he's been hiding inside of a cave ever since I got him, only coming out occasionally.

I think he may have ich... If you look from a few feet away from the tank, then it doesn't look like there's anything on him. But since today was the first day I got a good look at him, I could get up fairly close, and I can see this tiny dots on him, they're almost transparent, they're very obscure.

He just started eating today, fed him plenty of pellets and mysis, and he's feeding on the rocks. I don't see any scratching. His bones are starting to pop out from his skin, but I think that's because he refused to eat for a few days.

If he has ich, what do I do? I don't have a qt tank. Is there anything I can dose into the entire system? Thanks.

try to get pictures to confirm but if he does have ich the best way to treat it is in a QT tank with copper if thats not an option you can try ich management

My LFS told me that he would be fine, since he's acting normally, he is ok. I just want to know what you guys think on here. His behavior today is the best it's been since I got him a few days ago. I wouldn't have been able to get this picture of him any other day.

But, you may be able to see the dots im talking about on him, they're very faint and grainy.

Kinda looks more of a dusting, ie. Velvet than ich. But it could be the grainy Pic.

Can you try snap another one?

Its velvet or likely Cryptocaryon Irritans . Give it a freshwater bath and prepare to treat it with copper sulfate or Quinine Sulfate.

Do I need a qt tank to treat it with copper sulfate? Also, do I just put RO water in a bag and then put him in it?

Yes QT with copper (copper power at 2.0ppm) for 30 days. Also check the Disease forum section here for more detailed info on copper and treatment of ich/velvet.

For fresh water dip, get a container, fillnwith RO, bring to temp and aerate with a stone for 15-30 min or so then drop him in for 3-5 min. He will spazz a little and breathe rapidly. If breathing slows, pull him out.

Treatment is same for ich and velvet so you'll be covered either way. Velvet can kill quickly vs ich. FW dip should buy you some time.

How do I aerate with a stone? Also, will it be the end of the world if I don't treat him with copper after this.... I don't have a qt tank

Update: going to my LFS to buy that copper stuff, and maybe a small bucket I can put him in for the dip.

Put an air stone (from air pump) into whatever container you're going to use for the dip. Doesn't need to be large. I use a 2.5 quart specimen container. But it can be a Tupperware or whatever.

For a QT you can just grab a 10g or 20g from petco, a heater and a spunge filter and you're good to go.

Alright, how long do I have. I’m going to my LFS now, but I’m worried that maybe he’s infected my other fish. The dots look really small right now, does that mean we’re in the early stages of velvet?

If he's in the tank with other fish, all the livestock needs to go into QT and tank needs to go fallow.
