Just noticed this white thing hanging onto the back of my tang this morning. Looks like a piece of cotton.
What is it? Should I be concerned?

That's really strange. It could just be Lymphocystis, but the pic doesn't quite look like Lympho to me. How long have you had this fish?

Lymphocystis:

Symptoms - Lymphocystis appears as a white or beige colored cauliflower-like growth that usually starts on the fins and spines and sometimes spreads to the body. Initially it may be small (looks like ich), and then grows in size (which is how you know it’s not ich). Lympho is a virus that many fish carry for life. Fortunately, it is rarely fatal or even harmful to the fish, and symptoms will come and go.

Treatment options - No known cure or treatment exists. However, feeding vitamin-enriched foods and maintaining pristine water conditions may expedite the “going away” process.

About 3 weeks. It came from an established tank. The white thing is stringy

First off, I have no idea....@Humblefish is the expert here. However, I did notice what I see as a sunken belly area. Are you feeding algae/nori regularly? Here's the shot were the belly looks sunken.

No, I just feed pellets. Should i be feeding algae/nori? I am still new at saltwater

Yes yes yes and yes again. By the look of the rock I would guess your tank is on the newer side of set up?

Ok. Will do. But checked him and he is fine.

As mentioned above, all tangs are primarily herbivorous and need vegetable matter. Your YT should be getting nori on a daily basis IMO. You'll find (almost) all your other fish will start eating it too. As @Cleo642 said, feeding peeled boiled peas is useful for clearing constipation in fish due to the high fiber found therein. Nori is also useful for this purpose, being it contains iodine.

Getting back to that white thing on your YT ... "stringy" doesn't sound like Lympho to me. It could be a bacterial infection, but that is just a guess on my part at this point. You could be proactive, QT the fish and start treating with antibiotics. You can also soak antibiotics in the fish's food (this is reef safe), using a binder such as Seachem Focus. Or take the wait & see approach... if it grows/starts spreading to other parts of the body. I would at the very least start soaking the fish's food with vitamins - Selcon, Zoecon, Vita-chem, etc.

^^This needs to be addressed as well, to rule out environmental factors possibly being the culprit. How long has this tank been setup? How long since it completed it's cycle?

For algae, simply go to your local oriental market and pick up a package of sushi nori/algae/laver. Just make sure it's plain old algae and not with oil or salt. I made that mistake. And some might say roasted isn't good, but it is. Might lose some of the nutrient value, but it's what all public aquariums use.

And I do provide my tangs (two of them) a half sheet of nori a day.

Wow, great info Humblefish. Will get the products to treat Sunday
