Help with a new mushroom?

Yeah I’ve heard about API being unreliable so I will ditch those tests and get something a little better. Thanks for the advice!

As far as the mushroom goes though, I could swear I was standing right there as he placed it in the bag, and by the time I got home (10 minute drive) it was like this. I could be wrong on that, but that’s my memory of the situation.

I think maybe it’s time to call it a day and ditch it, nothing is happening with it and whatever it is I’m convinced it’s fully dead.
I think they gave you a dead piece of rubble glued to a frag plug. There is no mushroom there. If it looked like that in the bag, I think they they maybe accidentally grabbed the wrong plug out of the tank. If there was a mushroom there, even a severely retracted one, you’d be able to see it. Besides that, you should invest in quality test kits (not API), especially if you’re dosing stuff like NoPox. You should test weekly for NO3, PO4, Cal, and Mag, and every few days for Alk (at least until you know how much your tank is using consistently). You should also be keeping a log of all your test results so you can track stability (also, always try to test at the same time of day).

There’s no reason to ditch it, it’s not harming anything by being in there, there is a chance it could be there. I would give it some more time (or take it out and really examine the whole thing to see there is anything there).

Sorry just unsure on what this thing would look like dead and don’t want to leach any nasty chemicals into the tank.

Will taking it out of the water to examine cause it any further harm, or should I place it in a small bucket of tank water to examine?

Looking at it closely I see what could be small algae, and sand that may be keeping it close. Can I scrape this off by hand, or are there any household tools that can do the job? Sorry about all the questions

I agree there’s nothing there mushrooms can detach and move maybe it was on rubble rock and glued to a frag plug. Search everywhere but it looks like nothing but rock or skeleton or a old coral to me.

If it died, it’s only going to release a little bit of nitrates and phosphates into the water, so I wouldn’t worry about it leaching anything. You can take it out of the water to examine it for a moment, it won’t hurt anything. I wouldn’t scrub it off, the algae and little bit of sand I see wouldn’t negatively affect a mushroom. If after examining it you can’t see anything (be aware that they can retract to be very small), you can either leave the little piece of rubble in the tank and reuse it later to glue a frag onto, or take it out and let it dry and still reuse (you’ll want to soak it in tank water for an hour or two before glueing any frag onto it). Personally, I would just leave it, it’s an extra little bit of live rock, will be ready to glue a frag onto whenever you need it, and plus if there is a tiny little bit of mushroom left on it, it could grow back.

I'm sorry but yes this is an empty frag plug. No coral.present that the eye can see.
Lol.
Ya mushrooms can roam as they have a "foot" and can release to try and find a better home.
