So I pick up this acan a few weeks ago from a friend. It has had out its little feeding tentacles colors have looked well and seemed to acclimate just fine. Well yesterday I saw a little spot that looks like die off but I'm not to sure what I'm looking at. Any help would be greatly appreciated. New to the hobby.

75 gallon Tank parameters 5 month setup
Temp 78.1
Salinity 33
ALK 8
Ca 440
PH 8
Kh 143
PO4 .15
NO3 20
Doing weekly 5% water changes

How close is that frogspawn to it? Could be sweeper tentacles stinging it. Acans don’t fare well in coral warfare. A friend of mine had a whole acan head die from a hammer sting.

Also, your parameters are a bit off. Are you purposely running 33 salinity? 35/1.026 would be the minimum. Kh I believe is water hardness - I forget - but it’s not important in a reef tank. I would however get a dKh test kit to test for alkalinity. It’s the number two test behind salinity.

Good luck!

33 salinity is slowing being brought up I was running at 1.024 for a while did some more reading and now I'm bring it up I'm at 34/1.025 right now. Added in some pic of the frogspawn the acan is a little bit a way but not super far. Thanks for the help

I didnt know the difference in the test kit (api reef master) so I posted the ppm kh but I guess the dkh is 8 if I'm reading this right?

Most reefers will tell you that API kits aren’t accurate. I’ve never used so I can’t weigh in on that.

Kh isn’t used to measure alkalinity as far as I know. dKH is preferred. Also, the alkalinity in that kit doesn’t measure between 7.0-8.0-9.0. For example, a swing from 7.1 to 8.9 in a short amount of time is quite major.

Hydrometers haven’t been accurate for me in the past. I would look into a refractometer for more accurate readings. Salinity is probably the one parameter that you want to keep stable in your tank.

I’d say your frogspawn is far enough from your acans to rule out stinging but hard to tell. Good luck to you. Your frogspawn is looking healthy.

Well thank you very much :) I appreciate all the advice and kind words :)

I started out with API test kits and used hydrometers. I’ve been there. I also killed some corals and fish along the way. ;Blackeye

Might be a little too high up in the tank depending on your lighting. I keep mine at the bottom. If its a sting from other coral usually you can tell because the damage will be on one side.

Thanks in going to move the acan down a rock and a little further away from the frogspawn to see how it likes it
