Hello folks,

I'm quite new on Marine Tanks and Iam facing problems with brown algae.

Does anybody could help me to identify what I am dealing with?

Below some photo from the microscope

Thanks

What does the tank look like with the algae in it? Can you send pictures of the tank and highlight the problem patches? I unfortunately am not a phycologist, so can’t identify based off of microscope pictures alone....

OK, Will provide that. Tyy

Hard for me to tell for sure, but looks to me like diatoms (rod like things), Cyanobacteria (long string like stuff). The round single cell stuff no clue.

A lot of really normal stuff for a new tank and a good mix of it.

just make sure you are making water with RODI and the diatoms will use up all the silica in the water.

you may really like this article. It helped me ID a lot of stuff when I got my microscope.

I did not provide images of the problem... this after cleaned everything 5 days ago... turned dark the tank, oné full day or so, but it is growing fast now...

How old is your tank?
Did you use live rock or dead?

I used dead Marco rock and am having major diatom/algae issues. Right now I am just cleaning it up the best I can and getting a good clean up crew. I’m giving it another couple months and then gonna replace most with live rock if it doesn’t turn around.

what gives me hope is that the same Marco rock in my refugium has been lit for about 2 months longer and looks much better without the ugly algae issue. The display rock was cycled in a brute trash can without light (I thought this would lessen the ugly stage, but it did not)

BTW, thanks for the article!
