I have a 32 gallon tank that had 5 fish that were thriving for about a month and a half but all of a sudden died in a period of 24 hours. Im trying to restart but this brownish red stringy algae is everywhere. Is it harmful? And how do I get rid of it.

Google Red Slime Algae Cyanobacteria

Sometimes they can go by their own but that not seems to be in your case. Still if it's harmful, you can't add any fish as it might be poisonous. You have to test your phosphates and nitrates. I also suffered this 13 yrs ago but I managed to defeat it. Make sure you have a great flow.

Through massive understanding of the complexities of the environment and proper adjustments perhaps but even advanced hobbyists dont have this process down.

Please don't be illusioned that this will go away on its own. You will have to get your hands dirty for the fastest/easiest results imo

Yup. My tank was more bad than this one. I have to go fishless for about 4 months and have to buy a powerful pump. You have to stir it up with a rod. I also have to remove some with my hands (that was the most worst part). I got that algae by a live rock from then I never added any live rock to my tank....

Exactly. You got your hands dirty and it worked ;) Just wanted the op to get a clearer picture. In the end there's more than one way to skin a cat but imo there a easier paths than others

The most important thing you can do right now is determine what caused the die off.

Usually, this sort of thing happens when you introduce disease to the tank by adding a non-quarantined fish.

When I look at your tank, I don't see any power heads. Low flow can be a contributing factor when cyanobacteria develops in the tank.
