Hi Randy,

I am getting ready to change the media in my Ca reactor to something different, most likely the effluent flow and alk concentrations will change with the media swap. I am trying to determine what the change would be, or at least how to do some measurements and calculations to get myself in the ballpark so I do not overdose the alk and burn up all my SPS.

Currently I am using ARM media in an MTC Reactor. The pH in the first chamber is 6.80, effluent is 20ml/min via a masterflex dosing pump. I am going to switch to DaStaCo media that requires the pH in the rector to be at 6.0. I am thinking I can take a sample of the effluent and measure the alk, then determine the daily alk I am adding. When I swap out the media I should be able to do the same and adjust the effluent rate until I get the same daily alk being dispensed. Sound right? Any calculations you have that I can use?

Yes, that sounds like the best way.

It isn't a very satisfying unit of measure, but if you multiply the mL of fluid flow each minute by the increase in alkalinity in the effluent above the tank water, then you get a number like (20 mL/min *( 26 dKH (effluent) - 8 dKH(tank)) = 360 mL dKH

So then when you restart, aim for this value, even if the flow rate is different.
