I have a 3" maxima he does not open very far he has attached to a small rock so I moved him to the top of tank which is about 15"away from a 4bulb t5 fix. Dont think he is getting to much flow but there is really good flow but his mantle extends to the tip of the shell no farther. Didnt know if it was normal. Had him around a week. He turns around several times a day not sure if I should move him back to the sand or higher uo somehow. He is in a moderate flow area not sure if its too much any pointers would b great

Keep him away from sand.Water flow should Not be constant and or moving his mantle much. You'll need to feed him as well. I use Microvore "a brightwell Aquatics product" Let the food drift by. dispense with a very small turkey baster like device. He might be moving because conditions may not be to his liking.

Consult LFS that has clams for at least a week before they sell them. Read up on him. I'm still learning my self. I have a 6" Maxima Ultra under Led lighting.

FEED HIM or You Will Lose him. Good Luck :-))

Yeah I've been feeding him phyto but he may be getting too much flow just don't know how to fix it. I have one decent flat rock he is on tried moving power heads but does not seem to help hard to see his mantle he has turned to back of aquarium

You sir really need to research the caring for clams. Keep him away from sand? Most clams are kept on the sand bed! Feed him or lose him? FALSE!! Please do your research before handing out advice. Thank you :)

I am thinking of moving him to the sand cause it is a lot less flow I think he is getting blasted but want to make sure he has enough light what are signs of not enough light. Will be getting leds in two weeks

The mantel will be fully extended, like its stretching for the light. It's trying to absorb all the light it can through its mantel.
I kept my T. Crocea 11" under my T5HO's on a half clam shell for 3yrs. Never fed it! Sadly I wound up killing it while trying to chemically treat my tank for cyano & flatworms :( Up until that point it did wonderfully.
You may need to keep it higher up under those T5's. Par will be to low on the SB. As for flow? Medium to low flow is good. Just don't want the mantel folded over it's siphon continuously.

Ok it is not blowing the mantel that hard but I cannot figure out why it is not opening all the way the mantle looks healthy

How long have you had it? What other livestock do you have? What are your water parameters? How old is your tank? This last question is important as Clams do best in a well established tank. Oh and gotta pic? :)

Had it since last thursday.don't have params at moment I'm at work they look normal though. Tank has been up several years before I bought it a few months ago.

Pic the last pic is tge most he opened just for a while

Well check your parameters. Sometimes after a move you can get a mini cycle. A week isn't that long really. As long as the clam is showing mantel, isn't pinched anywhere or closed up tight, reacts quickly to touch or light, or isn't gapping, it should be ok. These are all easy to check. Wave your hand between the clam and the light, if it pulls its mantel in quickly, that's good and normal. Same goes when touched.

Yeah he's very active but he keeps rotating a couple times a day turns a complete 360

Haha-normal! It's just making itself happy. Only problem with that is, it might take a tumble off your rock :( Mine did once, very scary! Keep an eye on it, but let it turn. Any way to place it on the actual rock? Like in a groove or indentation area. So it can't blow itself off? Lol

Lol. I hoped he was. He has attached to a small rock so I can still move him around. I just was worried the way he was not opening all the way all the pics I see everyones are open a lot more. Do u think flow is a issue I can see the mantle moving from the current.

Movement is fine. Like I said just don't want the mantel folded over continuously. Thus blocking the siphon. Do not target feed it either! If the particles are to big you can clog the gills.

Just leave it be. Stop fussing! Lol

Lol. Thank you. Just like to try to be sure I'm doing everything possible. He will stay where he's at I will not move him to sand bed just wish he would turn back to the front so I can see him. Lol.

To NanoReefer: I did my research. Go find a copy of " Giant Clams in the sea and the Aquarium" By James Fatherree Copyright 2006 Pg 169-172

Your are Incorrect most Clams DO NOT Prefer to placed in sand (In the Aquarium) Preference in general is species specific. As to feeding: If your lighting is insuffiecient the clam will die without suplemental feeding.Their needs to enough nutrients in the water in addition to the nutrients derived from Zoozenthelle.

Please do your research before handing out advise as well.

Thanks: Fellow enthuiast
