hey so i have a 10 gallon reef with a yellow talied damsel. Before i have tried adding another damsel and the original one killed the new one. What other fish would be ok to add or how many damsels should i add to stop the fighting.

In a 10 gallon tank only 1 damsel. They are two agressive. You can only have 2-3 fish in that size tank so the only option will be a goby or a fast wrasse.

Well damsels are pretty territorial and in a 10 gallon probably lethal like you experienced. I don't think you can put any more especially since the one you have in now has established itself. Someone with more experience should probably chime in. [HASHTAG]#reefsquad[/HASHTAG]

PS: I would personally shy away from damsels especially on a small tank like that and go with a traditional clown pair with a goby and some shrimp.

Would a cleaner or peppermint shrimp get along with it? And also do the shrimp eat algae?

Eh, your kinda stuck when it comes to fish. Unless you take out the damsel, rehome it for a few weeks and add a new fish to the tank before adding the damsel back.

A cleaner shrimp would be ok, neither a cleaner or peppermint shrimp eat algae. Your best bet for that is snails. Turbo's are one of my favorites to use for algae control

Would that be for algae on rocks or glass because most of my algae is hair algae on rocks.

10g is pretty small to add any more fish to an established damsel. Yellowtails generally aren't too bad for being a damsel, but if it's claimed the whole tank as it's own, then you will be hard pressed to be able to add more fish.

A damsel will ignore inverts. Snails, emerald crabs and tuxedo urchins will be your best bets for eating nuisance algae.

X2

Possible tankmates that can handle heckling are six line wrasse, yellow watchman gobies (more because they occupy the bottom and can hide), and perhaps clownfish.

Pink skunk are pretty nasty, tomato and fire clowns also. They grow large and quickly so a ten gallon is not ideal. Perhaps a small yellow watchman goby, small sixline wrasse, a ocellaris clown, and then add a single damsel afterward. That is a very heavily stocked 10 gallon but probably what I would do.

Keep in mind sixline have the propensity to be more aggressive even than damsels believe it or not. You may have to remove it once it settles in. The goby should be the largest fish and first added fish. I've seen them use their large mouths to grab an aggressor before.

I have a yellow tang, a blue damsel, a 3 stripe damsel which is the most aggressive of damsels, a Tomato Clown Fish, and a black chromis. They've all been together for over 2 years and I'm convinced that it's because they're all very aggressive and can dish it out as well as take it. Putting aggressive fish with other aggressive fish is a gamble but it's worked for me.

I had damsel once. Well had 3. The blue damsel killed the other two. And was working on killing my glown. So I traded the damsel in. It took me almost 2 hours to catch it but I got it. I will never do a damsel again. I will also never tell anyone to get one. If you want a good hardy fish that won't get to big I would do Chromis. They are a schooling fish so maybe get 2 or 3 and do a glown. But whatever you chose for your cube get rid of that damsel. It will be more of a headache then it's worth.
