I have a 25 gallon tank that I want to transform into a reef tank, for the sake of increasing water volume and adding a refugiums, I decided to add a sump to the aquarium. I would like to avoid HOB overflows, but I can't seem to find a guide on installing an overflow to a non reef ready tank.

Do any of you have a guide on how to add an overflow to a reef tank, also I don't live in the USA, therefore I unfortunately won't be able to buy something like a eclipse or ghost overflow, so is there a guide on building an overflow box?

Also, I plan on going with a Herbie style overflow

First, decide where to drill the holes. A lot of tanks are tempered at the bottom, so you might have to drill one of the sides/back.

If you can't purchase a fabricated plastic overflow, the I would build a glass one.

Figure out the dimensions of the glass you will need to fit the plumbing parts, as well as some room for your hand. At this point, I would have all my plumbing purchased and dry fitted on the tank to help with measuring.

Call a glass store and have the pieces cut.

Use 100% silicone caulking (I use GE Silicone I) and caulk the overflow into place. Don't use kitchen and bath, or anything with an anti-fungal in it.

Then, once the silicon is cured, finish the plumbing. I only friction fit my overflow plumbing for ease of maintenance and adjustments. I only 'glue' the pipes after the bulkheads outside the tanks.

Did I miss anything?

Just go simple.. get yourself a bulkhead, drill a hole, slap a slip 90 PVC pipe in the bulkhead and from there it is just a quick T fitting down to your sump.

I have a T with a tube out the top . Stops unwanted noise by letting the air out. You can search other designs, but when it is 100% quiet in the house. I only hear my skimmer running.

I wanted to try and cut a notch off the top and add an external box , but don't wanr to risk breaking the aquarium, so I already have most of the equipment, the only thing I don't really know how to do is the box itself, have you seen anyone do it?

Might try that

If you have any questions let me know.. I can also get you more pics of what I did to quiet all the water down in my sump
I will probably use the same idea, but with two bullheads. How did you dril the holes? Did you do it yourself or had someone do it?

I don't it myself. I have an acrylic tank, but you can get glass cutting bits online for the size you need.

Once down the back of the tank I came up with this configuration..
It keeps bubbles at the top of my water to stop micro bubbles in my tank.

I used one of these covers on the 90.. I busted a few sections off to allow more flow..
