Howdy,

I am trying to better my mechanical filtration in this sump, it's currently a single filter sock that I use filter floss, I cut roughly 3" strips and roll them up. I just feel I could do a much better job without spending a ton on a filter roller or something.

I am handy so any DIY is welcome.

Hello Hallowhead. Here I made a filter box out of plastic cereal containers inside a 10 gallon tank for a sump. I use two, one inside the other to get a good height. Drill several holes on the bottom for drainage, the top container has holes near the top lid for over flow when the filter material starts to plug up, but I never let it get that bad. I use plastic egg crate material to fill in the containers so I don't need so much material. I was using filter pads cut to size, now I am trying floss material instead. With the cover keeps the noise and splashing to a minimum. I have my skim draining back into the filter box, to catch large waste particles and save the liquid nutrients to keep my No3 and Po4 from bottoming out. It is so easy to replace floss than the socks.
Good luck!
Ant

The Reef Diaper is another option you should look at. It uses a light weight disposable filter element and the flange assembly is reused. They are very simple to change and you get a perfectly clean filter every time. You can purchase the filter elements in bulk for a buck a piece. The Reef Diaper provides a simple disposable solution without the complexity of a roller filter. Follow the link below for more info. Let me know if you have any questions.
