Hi everyone I have a frag tank that I just can’t seem to get a hold on the GHA. The tank is only about 4 months old so I might still be going through some uglies. My phosphates were high at about .5 ppm. I’ve added phosguard and water changes have got it to about .1 ppm. I want to add a reactor but can’t get one with a pump with everything going on. Once I get the phosphates down lower will the algae naturally die off. Or should I still remove as much as I can. I have a pile of rocks in the corner for the tang to hide can I take those out of the water to clean them or is that big advised? Any help is appreciated thanks!

You'll want to manually remove as much as you can first and foremost. You may have to manually remove once a week or more. I suggest starting a siphon with a hose and holding in one hand next to the other hand that's picking tufts off the rock.

While this is going on, maintain your phosphate where you have it at .1 or so. This will help. What are your nitrates at?

Lastly, what is your photoperiod like?

If you get to the point where you dont think your winning against it I’d suggest Flucanzol to kill the algae. Lowering phosphates to zero will invite a Dino infestation and your coral need phosphates to thrive.

That's why I asked if it was bottomless, I have a frag tank about the same age(3 months) and no GHA just Dino's(kept in complete control with UV sterilizer). I've even got a 6 line wrasse in it to control pests and he eats and poops pretty good. I wondering if OP is overfeeding? Not cleaning detritus out, etc.

You can also remove frag plugs, etc. and do H2O2 dip--that's kills GHA real good.(for the pile of rocks in the corner for the Tang to hide in).

Thanks for everyone’s suggestions. My light period is from 10am-8pm. For phosphates I’m shooting for around .05 ppm. I do water changes about every 10 days and suck up as much detritus as possible. For feeding I throw sea weed in for the tang and feed once per day (rods or LRS). I may bump my lights back a little and see if that helps. I think it was definitly the high phosphates that was feeding it so much. I have removed most of what I can from the frag rack. Later today I’ll see if I can take the rocks out and get as much off as I can. My refugium was also packed with macro so I cleaned that out so hopefully the macro will put complete the gha.

Oh and almost forgot my nitrates are very lower. I’ve been using Red Sea test kit to test for them and they’re either undetectable or at 2 ppm
