I'm not sure what this is actually called. The LFS where I got it calls it Branching GSP. I think it is a Corky Sea Finger. Either way it is growing in leaps an bounds. Two months ago when I put it in my tank it was abt 1 1/2 inches tall it is now abt 4 inches and adding two arms. I also notice that a hard black base is forming. Is that base normal?

Pictures would help.

What about the base. Does GSP form a crust, or do I have a problem? It is hard to the touch.

Healthy GSP tissue should be slightly purple and semi flexible.

Looks like where the tissue isn't, algae is grown there. No worries though, it's just growing where it can get the most light. Expected lower and shaded.

In my tank I have both Gsp and gorgonians, however I've never seen branching gsp. As stated above healthy gsp tissue is usually a light to medium purple in color and is firm yet fleshy to the touch. On the other hand many gorgonians tend to show a recession of live tissue around the base that exposes the skeleton which is made of a dark brown to black woody material, this is not unusual and typically is nothing to worry about unless it spreads rapidly up the shaft of the gorgonian. Again I am not familiar with branching gsp and do not know if it is in fact a true gorgonian and if it would act the same.

I've heard of discussions between 'branching' vs regular GPS. Haven't been able to get my hands on the branching kind as all mine are just "regular" lol. But cooooool

Briareum asbestinum possibly but it definitely looks like a type of encrusting gorgonian but the name escapes me.
