Hi all new reefer here! Can you please guide me on what testers I need for my tank? Looking at the hanna testers but there are like 3 different versions per model...

Thanks!

I have the ALK, nitrate HI 782. For the po4 I use the HI774. The salinity/temp meter. I will be getting the mag when it comes out. I don't use the cal checker as it has too many steps for my liking.

Which are you looking at? I use Salinity (HI-98319), Phosphate (HI-774 ULR, PPM), and Alkalinity (HI-772).

I made the mistake of getting the Calcium checker too. I never use it. My Red Sea test is simpler and produces similar results.

ok so for calcium redsea instead of hanna

Whatabout the rest - there seems to be many different models and choices

Was thinking of Salifert for the cycle as cheaper and then go for the hanna products after.. First things first:

What tests does one need to have?

I just check alk, salt, phos and nitrates with Hanna. Mag when it comes out. What else were you looking to test?

I would like to have all the tests which are needed. Many different opinions out there so want get the correct tests from day one.. I like Hanna as they look like the most accurate

I use these

HannaPhosphate ULRHI774HI774-25
HannaNitrate HRHI782HI782-25
HannaAlkalinityHI772HI772-26
HannaMarine SalinityHI98319HI70024P

The big 5. If your cycling just get those cheap tetra strips. They will ballpark your cycle while you cycle. Then get the big guns.
yeah for the cycle I will use the cheap stuff.. So with the big 5 which models are the right ones for hanna as many different versions per model and im even more confused now

The rest really depends on what you want. Hanna High Range Nitrate is really easy to use and worth it for many reefers. Beyond that (and the ones listed above), i don’t see a lot of advantage for Hanna over some of the standard Hugh quality test kits. Some Hanna checkers (like Calcium) tend to over complicate things. I manually test Magnesium, Calcium, Nitrate (though I’ll eventually grab a Hanna checked for this), and Ammonia. I don’t test ammonia often at all (it’s an established tank), I never test nitrite, and I don’t run my own tests for copper or other elements. An occasional ICP test gives me an idea where I stand on the elements front.
